Rahm, Upset That Garcia Won’t Be Eligible for Ryder Cup, Implores PGA Tour and LIV Golf to Talk

The schism that’s been created in the golf world by several pros joining rival tour LIV Golf and thus being banned from the PGA Tour has created some collateral damage.

If players aren’t a part of the PGA or DP World Tours, they are ineligible to play in the Ryder Cup. So far, that would take out Dustin Johnson (who was a perfect 5-0-0 for the U.S. team last year) and Sergio Garcia, who is the top point-scorer in the history of the event.

Spaniard Jon Rahm is hoping that his countryman will somehow be able to play in the event, which will take place in Rome, Italy in the fall of 2023.

Speaking after the Open Championship concluded, Rahm lamented the current situation as being harmful for the game.

Rahm said:

“The event that gives golf the most publicity around the world is the Ryder Cup… Because of this nonsense there are players like (Garcia) who can’t play the Ryder Cup. That already makes me a little more angry. It is something that creates this sport. It is the reason that my family and I started playing golf and the reason that many in this world play golf.”

“And because of what is happening, Sergio Garcia is not going to play—the best player Europe has ever had … I hope they sit down and talk.”

Garcia was one of the bright spots of the European team’s defeat at Whistling Straits last year, winning three of his four matches. He’s been on every European Ryder Cup team but one since 1999. He has a total of 25 match victories and 28.5 points accumulated, which are both records.
