Rory McIlroy Closes In On Top PGA TOUR Money List Spots

After nearly all of the headlines Rory McIlroy made in 2024 were off the course, the Northern Irishman is on one of his patented hot streaks going into the second Major of the year.

His team victory with Shane Lowry last month at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was just his second top-10 finish of the year. But McIlroy followed it up with a dominating performance at the Wells Fargo Championship this weekend. He cruised to victory by five strokes over Xander Schauffele to win at Quail Hollow for the fourth time in his career.

Winning the signature event allowed him to bank $3.6 million, bringing his career win total to $86.69 million. He’s now within $10 million of Phil Mickelson’s $96.64 million total.

Interestingly enough, the PGA Tour website already has McIlroy in second place – Mickelson is nowhere to be found.

With inflated purses, McIlroy has seen his earnings skyrocket in recent years. Last year, he totaled $13.92 million with two wins. The year before, he won three times and earned $8.65 million.

So far this year, he’s at $6.60 million. He will most likely pass Mickelson sometime in 2025.

At No. 1 on the list is Tiger Woods, with a shade under $121 million earned. Assuming that another fat winner’s check isn’t in Woods’s future, McIlroy could pass him in around four or five years at his current pace.

But up next on McIlroy’s target list is this week’s PGA Championship. It takes place at Valhalla in Kentucky, which was the site of his last major win just under 10 years ago.

At most major U.S. sportsbooks, only Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is favored ahead of McIlroy to win.
