Rory McIlroy Admits Golf’s ‘Sh*tshow’ State Highlights Two Specific Events

Rory McIlroy did not medal at The Olympics, but he did realize something: money isn’t everything.

McIlroy has been one of the biggest spokesmen against LIV Golf since its introduction several years ago, but the division in the sport has undoubtedly caused issues amongst players and the game in general. 

After playing in his second Olympic Games, and his first with fans, McIlroy made a shocking revelation after his final round, where he highlighted how the game of golf has become a “sh*tshow” due to its division, and how two events that don’t directly involve money are arguably the two best around:

“I still think that the Ryder Cup is the best tournament that we have in our game, pure competition, and I think this has the potential to be right up there with it. I think with how much of a sh*tshow the game of golf is right now and you think about the two tournaments that might be the purest form of competition in our sport, we don’t play for money in it. It speaks volumes for what’s important in sports and what’s important.”

It’s an interesting perspective and one that truly highlights the importance of individual events where these players are representing their countries or regions.

McIlroy has always loved the Ryder Cup, but the Olympics is now on the list of events he believes are among the best in the sport. The fame and the money and the accolades are mostly set aside, and it’s about playing for the country you represent instead of the paycheck at the end.
