Rory McIlroy’s 66 at RBC Canadian Open Came with a Catch — a Hangover
Rory McIlroy shot 66 on Thursday at the RBC Canadian Open, which is pretty on-brand for the #3 golfer in the world. But he was not his normal self when he teed off on Thursday morning, he was still working off a hangover from the night before.
Wednesday night was his caddie and best friend Harry Diamond’s birthday. A 7:40 a.m. tee time on Thursday morning was not going to stop the two of them from celebrating the occasion as they went off to dinner and cracked open a bottle of wine.
McIlroy said they were still feeling it from the night before, and he was not in tip-top shape as he hit his first ball at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, admitting he had a bit of a “slow start”:
“Harry’s birthday dinner last night so had a couple of glasses of wine. I was probably feeling a little groggy when I woke up.”
Plenty of us have been able to experience the same sensations. Golf trips with the boys usually result in some interesting stories, and there is usually no shortage of drinks. We all know, for the most part, how it feels to wake up for an early morning tee time after a night out. You think, “It’s golf! I’ll get up, I’ll be fine!”
Of course, that is not always the case. But nevertheless, McIlroy showed up and got himself in a good position to be right there as the weekend approaches. He fired a -4 and put himself in T4 at the end of Thursday’s round. He also rattled off three straight birdies at one point:
