Rory McIlroy Ignites Rivalry with Fellow PGA TOUR Pro: ‘He’s Criticizing His Own Product’
Rory McIlroy has responded to Charley Hoffman’s letter to PGA TOUR pros that suggested several changes, including more awareness in terms of the pace of play, the focus on TGL, and other things.
McIlroy did not take it lightly.
Yesterday, we reported on Hoffman’s letter, which followed up another communication toward TOUR players from Justin Thomas just two weeks earlier. Hoffman is concerned about the state of professional golf, but McIlroy, who has been somewhat of an unappointed spokesperson for all things PGA TOUR, said he took the note personally.
First, Hoffman’s point that players should be less focused on “exterior commitments,” including TGL, was not taken lightly by McIlroy, who said:
“I think the thing he forgot to mention is the PGA Tour owns 20% of TGL, so he’s criticizing his own product.”
Hoffman is not involved in TGL and he is certainly within his rights to state that perhaps putting more effort toward the tournaments that actually matter. Nevertheless, TGL is a strategy the TOUR is using to establish new interest and potentially new fans in the sport of golf, so McIlroy’s point is also valid.
However, there was more in Hoffman’s letter that McIlroy took exception toward, including the idea that players should be doing everything they can to play as much as possible. This comes as a direct criticism of McIlroy, who stated that he would be playing fewer tournaments this year.
McIlroy has taken part in other non-PGA TOUR events, like the Race to Dubai, The Showdown on TNT, and of course TGL, which made him feel as if a few of Hoffman’s points “were pointed at” him.
This led to McIlroy’s final point:
“What every player has to do is look out for themselves. We have to do what’s best for our own individual careers, and yes, at the back of our mind, try to do whatever we can to help the TOUR. But the best way to help the TOUR is to tee it up and play as best we can.”
I asked Rory McIlroy about the letter Charley Hoffman wrote.
No surprise, he gave me a thoughtful answer and clearly took it a bit personally… pic.twitter.com/amkHqbEfgh

It’s interesting to hear McIlroy talk about players needing to do what’s best for them, as he was always so quick to criticize players leaving the PGA TOUR for LIV in an effort to play less golf.
McIlroy has softened his stance on LIV in the last few years, but he still holds some weight in the TOUR vs. LIV Golf story, especially as Tom McKibbin, his protege, chose LIV over the PGA TOUR earlier this month.
