Rory McIlroy Maintains Status As Negotiator with PIF Despite PGA TOUR Policy Board Slight

A week before the PGA Championship, the PGA Tour is holding its annual Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

But much of the news coming out of Charlotte seems more appropriate for Washington, D.C., and something you might see on C-SPAN.

It all started Wednesday when Rory McIlroy said that, due to concerns among other PGA Tour players, he wouldn’t be seeking to rejoin the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors after all.

Separately, it was announced that Tiger Woods would be the only golfer on a five-man transaction subcommittee that would negotiate directly with members of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to try to reach a final agreement that’s been in the works since last June.

Now, it appears that Woods won’t be the only player on that committee after all. McIlroy said that he was given a spot at the table for those negotiations.

McIlroy said following his round at Quail Hollow on Thursday:

“I’m not on the board, but I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee. I don’t have a vote, so I don’t have a meaningful say in what happens in the future, but at least I can feel like I can be helpful on that committee, and that was sort of a compromise for, I guess, not getting a board seat.”

McIlroy also responded to reports that his relationship with Woods was strained over the two’s differing opinions on the future of men’s professional golf.

“There’s no strain there. We might see the future of golf a little bit differently but I don’t think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship,” McIlroy said.

Interestingly enough, while Woods was reported as the only player on that committee, McIlroy said that the group met on a Zoom call for 90 minutes on Sunday.
