Rory McIlroy Takes Latest Dig at LIV Golf: ‘They’re Very Aware of the Decision They Made’

Rory McIlroy’s distaste for LIV Golf has not disappeared, new quotes from the Northern Irishman confirmed on Tuesday.

Ahead of his first-ever appearance at The Olympics in Paris, McIlroy was spotted on the range at Le National Golf Club in France, hitting balls and sharpening his game.

However, a press conference with McIlroy brought up familiar feelings about the rival promotion of the PGA TOUR. McIlroy said:

“I mean, I don’t think there’s any other way to do it because it’s hard to compare the golf that they play to the golf that we play. That’s the reason they didn’t get World Ranking points, right? So if you want to qualify for the Olympics, you knew what you had to do. Just like if you wanted to qualify for the Ryder Cup, you knew what you had to do. They were very aware of the decision they made when they did.”

Of course, LIV Golfers knew it would be an uphill climb to qualify for things like Majors and events like the Ryder Cup. However, to say the golf played by the two tours is incomparable is just ridiculous. There’s not that much of a difference; it’s just that LIV’s standards do not align with those of the OWGR.

McIlroy’s latest barbs reek of jealousy and comparison. It’s funny: in December, McIlroy changed his tune about LIV Golf defectors when his friend Jon Rahm chose to leave the TOUR. Rory was ready to do anything to get Rahm back on the team because he would be a tremendous loss to the Europeans.

In a way, the Ryder Cup reference almost sounds like a barb at Bryson DeChambeau, who was slighted by the U.S. side for a number of players who were in no way on the same level as him. Politics likely got in the way, as Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, who had lackluster seasons on TOUR, made the team.

Perhaps McIlroy is still tasting sour grapes from his loss to DeChambeau at the U.S. Open.

In reality, there is a really easy way to compare the golf the two tours play. One plays 72 holes, one plays 54. Since Rory was bested at the U.S. Open by a guy who plays golf that is so incomparable, what's that say?

From a fan perspective, pick a side and stick with it.
