Mamaroneck, NY – I joined Rory McIlory’s interview virtually through media access, and was able to hear a few interesting things from him, outside of this week’s US Open.

Rory was asked about his home life, and how the new baby has affected him not only at home, but on the golf course. He explained that a few years ago, he would take his “office” home with him. He was unable to remove golf from the rest of his life, meaning that when he had a tough day on the course, those emotions followed him home. His relationship with his wife Erica has helped him keep golf at the course, but the arrival of his daughter Poppy has kicked that up a notch.

“The bad days are better now”

He was asked later about his routine in the gym, and how he stays in shape. He mentioned that getting in shape was out of necessity, after injuring a few vertebrae in his spine. He needed to stabilize and strengthen his lower body and back to insure he would not injure it again.

Now onto golf.

His first impressions of Winged Foot?

“It’s awesome. I love it. It’s hard obviously, but very fair. You need a lot of imagination. A lot of feel involved. Especially on the greens, where’s your easiest next putt from? A lot of thinking ahead on this course.”

Rory was asked about his past performances in majors, and how he has struggled. He had this to say…

“I’ve gotten off to slow starts and putting pressure on myself for the start of tournaments. When I start tournaments well, I tend to stay up there.”

Rory Mcilroy Interview Winged Foot US Open

Rory McIlory is looking for his first major victory since 2014, when he won back to back majors at the PGA and the Open. It still feels weird to say that Rory hasn’t won one in 6 years, but I have a feeling his major drought is coming to an end in the near future.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
