Rory Rages in Bunker but Recovers to Tie for Lead
Rory McIlroy fired a sizzling 67 in the opening round at The Country Club in the US Open.
With one bogey and four birdies, he is one of few plyers who were able to remain relatively unscathed on Thursday morning.
He did lose his cool during the front nine though. After a series of shots that required incredible short game saves to remain near even par, he landed himself in a bunker on the 5th (his 14th of the day).
After advancing the ball from his terrible lie, he proceeded to take a few furious, violent swings at the bunker, letting his frustrations out in a way that was reminiscent of Sergio Garcia’s bunker tantrum.

He limped away, but quickly re gathered himself to get up and down for par.
Whether the frustrations were purely golf-related is another question. He was three under for his day and being overly frustrated didn’t correlate with his flawless round up until that point.
Perhaps his de facto status as the calm voice in the presser finally came to a head. As Shane Lowry had said, players are sick of the LIV line of questioning, and have ‘had it up to here’.
I imagine the constant questioning has taken its toll on Rory, being quizzed more about office politics and on-course tensions rather than his golf swing.
Needless to say, he recovered well as he so often does, and is currently tied for the lead after eighteen holes.
