Ryder Cup Star Sergio Garcia Appears to be Barred from Future Ryder Cups
It is no secret that Sergio Garcia’s impact in the Ryder Cup has been huge with his 25-13-7 record. Garcia has been a part of each Ryder Cup team dating back to 1999 and also being the record holder of 25 points. The next closest is Nick Faldo at 23, and out of the active players, Lee Westwood is at 20, and Ian Poulter is at 15. However, Poulter and Westwood will likely have the same fate as Garcia if changes aren’t made.
It’s been circulating that Sergio’s reign in Ryder Cups is all but over. Do you agree?
Sergio Garcia has officially been fined for his unexcused withdrawal from the BMW PGA Championship.
— Golf Digest (@GolfDigest) October 11, 2022
This comes off the heels of his recent fine for withdrawing from the BMW PGA a few weeks ago, as well as his possible soon-to-be forfeited DP World Tour membership. Love him or hate him, it’s possible you may never see the best European Ryder Cup player in another Ryder Cup again.
On a side note, the next closest of active players is Rory McIlroy at 13 points, but given his stature, he has not fared well in past Ryder Cups with an all-time record of 12-12-4. He was fortunate in the historic 2012 Ryder Cup to get a very important point for Team Europe to win because he nearly missed his tee time.
It is likely Team Europe will see lots of new faces as Paul Casey, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood will not be permitted to return in the 2023 Ryder Cup as it stands right now. European players like Robert MacIntyre and Sepp Straka are likely to make their debuts in 2023 if they keep up their form.
Time will dictate the fate of players of both American and European.
