SALTY: Patrick Reed Tried Taking Legal Action Against Brandel Chamblee
All of the recent talk about Patrick Reed can get a bit stale. The whole situation just took a new and unexpected turn, involving one of golf’s most explosive and outspoken analysts.
We all know the story by now and it doesn’t need to be repeated again. Reed is still getting a ton of criticism from fans and on-air personalities for what he did in the sand trap over a month ago. The issue didn’t seem to get under the skin of Reed, but that apparently was a facade. It’s now reported that Reed’s attorney attempted to enforce a cease-and-desist order on Golf Channel’s, Brandel Chamblee.
Apparently, this was Reed’s attempt to get Chamblee to stop blasting him on-air, for alleged lies and unsubstantiated opinions, that should not be spread to the general public. This situation has no legal basis considering Chamblee’s freedom of speech and freedom of the press on his side. Furthermore, to prove Chamblee’s comments were lies, Reed and his lawyer would have to prove that he did not intentionally commit the penalty, which is impossible.
Chamblee, who received the letter from Reed’s lawyer on December 13th, isn’t too worried about the issue either.“My job is to be accurate in my analysis and I weigh my words heavily,” Chamblee told Golfweek. “Nothing I said on the air did I say flippantly. I thought about how exactly to say it to get closer to the larger point about the traditions of the game. That’s the origin of my remarks. They had no malice. They were meant to be accurate and admonishing about the decay of the traditions of the game. Instead of self-policing, it’s catch-me-if-you-can. And that bothers me.”
Even more disappointing, in my mind, is that Chamblee isn’t targeting Patrick Reed to where it looks like any kind of discrimination. Chamblee goes after everyone on the PGA TOUR. To be honest, if anyone had a basis for a legal order like this, it would be Brooks Koepka considering Chamblee has constantly come after him in recent years with no signs of stopping.
If Reed would like all of the snickering and jeering to end at events and in the media, he has one easy solution; just own up to his mistake. However, since it doesn’t look like he’s willing to do that, anytime soon, he’ll have to deal with the criticism for as long as someone has something to say about it.
