Saudi Golf League Will Begin In June In The UK This Summer
On Wednesday, LIV Golf Investments announced that what had been called the Saudi Golf League will now have a new name, LIV Golf Invitational Series. They also announced that the league will launch in June and give out $255 million in total purses.
The series will have eight-events this year with four U.S. sites and single events in the U.K., Thailand and Saudi Arabia. A host site for the season-ending Team Championship has not been announced yet. The first event of the series kicks off on June 9th at Centurion Golf Club in London, England.

In the press release CEO of LIV Golf Investments Greg Norman said:
“I want golf to grow, players to have additional opportunities, and fans to have more fun. My mission is to help the game reach its full potential and we know the role of golf as an entertainment product is critical to overall participation in the sport. In many ways, we are a start-up. We have a long-term vision and aim to grow. I believe we have a very bright and exciting future.”
Although the release set the dates and venues of the tournaments, it did not include any TV partners or players who have committed to play.
The schedule for the 2022 series is:
June 9-11: Centurion Golf Club, London, England
July 1-3: Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, Portland, Ore.
July 29-31: Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, Bedminster, N.J.
Sept. 2-4: The International, Boston, Mass.
Sept. 16-18: Rich Harvest Farms, Chicago, Ill.
Oct. 7-9: Stonehill Golf Club, Bangkok, Thailand
Oct. 14-16: Royal Greens Golf Club, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Oct. 28-30: Team Championship, TBA
This schedule, according to the release, does not compete with golf’s four majors or other international events allowing players “to make their own choices about where to play.” Although PGA TOUR commissioner Jay Monahan has said that any players leaving the TOUR to join a breakaway league will be banned from rejoining the TOUR.

The release also said that LIV Golf Investments is providing over $400 million in seed money to get the series launched. In order to launch they will need 48 players to make up 12 four-man teams. The first year is going to be a “beta test” of this new format. There will also be a new draft of teams before every event. Each event will also be 54 holes and there will not be a cut with each event being a shotgun start.
Each of the first seven events will have a purse of $25 million where $20 million will be used for individual prizes and $5 million will be distributed among the top three teams with all players paid out. After the first seven events there will be $30 million distributed to the top-three players from the entire season where the individual champion will get the largest amount of it. The final event of the series, the Team Championship, will have a $50 million purse.
