DO-NOT-Let-Putting-Greens-Fool-You

We all know it is not easy to know how and where your ball will roll once you putt it.  However, more often than not we see ourselves over exaggerating how severe a green’s slope is.  Just a word of advice…the courses most of us are playing on ARE NOT Oakmont or Augusta!

So, how can you get yourself to stop psyching your mind out on the putting surface?  Well, keep reading…

Prior to reading this it may be beneficial to check out my 6/18 rule and the Raw Feel rule article I recently published.

Now to the good stuff.  First and foremost when reading a putt, start by telling yourself there is NO BREAK.  By doing this, you give yourself a clean and unbiased point of view.  If you were to go up to a putt and think there is a HUGE left to right break, then you may in fact over estimate it.  That is why you must tell yourself there is nothing there at first.  This will also help greatly when noticing break.  If you act as if there is nothing there you will see the slight breaks.

Another thing to keep in mind is to be careful.  Think about if you were to miss, how tough will your following putt be?  This is another way of saying you do not need to aim too far outside of the hole in most scenarios.  If you keep it to outside the hole by one cup then you have a far better chance at not giving up multiple strokes.  To implement this, you simply try to aim your line closer to the hole than you have been recently.  This is a great strategy for anyone that aims way outside the hole on occasion, but then their roll does not break and they leave themselves with a difficult second putt.

The best piece of advice I can give is to never give the hole away with a putting line that should have never been chosen.  Think about where you are aiming.  Picture the ball rolling.  Picture the ball rolling out of the hole in rewind.  If you are able to utilize the technique of starting with NO PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS, then you will be able to pick up on the slight breaks that are there while eliminating the large breaks that are not there.
