Great shot!

Hit that approach shot perfectly!  Got the hard part out of the way.

Now knock that 3-footer in for birdie.

Whoops…

Hasn’t that happened to all of us?  For some odd reason, it appears that 3-foot putts are one of the most missed putts in the sport.  The 3-footer can be the most difficult putt at different times.  This is especially true when pressure is applied. In this article I have indicated different tips, steps, and thoughts to keep in mind when standing over a 3-foot putt.

First things first,  RELAX.  I know it is easy to say but hard to do.  However, if you are not relaxed then the putt is near impossible.  Calm yourself.  YOU CAN DO IT.  It is only three feet.  Get your head right and be CONFIDENT.

A thing to remember and keep in mind is that this 3-footer is no tap in.  You still need to stroke the ball and give it a good roll.  I often see guys, and gals, using a tap in approach and leaving these putts short.  Three feet hit softly also brings more break into the putt than what is necessary.  It is only three feet, yes, but HIT THE BALL.

Now as far as aiming goes, there is a great tip I have to offer.  If you do this accordingly, then you will definitely see more of these putts holed.  In my experience, most 3-footers have just a hair of break on them if hit at the right speed.  The right speed is as follows:  Picture the hole being 2-2.5 away.  Aim, depending on break, within the actual hole.  DO NOT EVER aim outside of the hole when doing this.  That is a HUGE mistake i see many players do.  With the right speed, most 3-footers do not enough to aim outside the cup.  Now, there are indeed extreme cases.  If you are stuck in one of these extreme cases, then try your best.  However, if you have what I’d like to call a normal 3-footer then try what i have stated above.

Quick recap…

  • Relax yourself.  Get your mind ready to make that putt. Be confident.
  • Remember, this IS NOT a tap in putt.  You must give it a decent roll.
  • Act as if the hole is 2-3 holes past the actual hole.  Aim for that hole by tracing your aim and line through the actual hole.  Never aim outside of the hole on a 3-footer.
