STYLE: Lyle & Scott Brings Premium, Performing Looks to the Course

One of my favorite parts of early spring and late fall golf is that with the right fit, regardless if you want to show up a little late or leave a bit early, you can still blend in while you’re in the office. Indeed, with the right pants, shirt, and sweaters, no one knows the wiser if you’re sneaking in a few holes (if not a round).

Lyle & Scott has some incredible, stylish, and high-quality pieces that can achieve that goal, whether you’re committed to the office or the course.  The U.K.-based was originally founded in 1874 as a cashmere clothing company based in the Scottish Borders town of Hawick. Over the following 140 years, Lyle & Scott has been the official apparel of the Ryder Cup Team in 1980 and sported by a range of Open winners, including Greg Norman and Ian Baker-Finch.

Lyle & Scott was kind enough to provide me with a 1/4 Zip Pullover, V Neck Pullover, and Golf Gilet.  After opening the packaging, it was immediately apparent that these were high-quality pieces that felt as good as they looked.

The 1/4 Zip Pullover is Lyle & Scott’s interpretation of every golfer’s go-to layer. But instead of using the commonplace, sweatshirt-esqe material, Lyle & Scott goes with a cotton-merino knit construction that adds a touch of class to what should be a staple of your early spring, late fall wardrobe.

The high collar and cinched wrists and waist all come together to make sure that you stay warm, even while bombing drives during windy November rounds. Add with minimal branding, and the truth is that this 1/4 Zip could easily be worn on the golf course, while apple picking with the family, or during a casual night out with friends.

On days that there’s less wind, but the weather is cool; Lyle & Scott has the V Neck Pullover.  Based around a merino wool/acrylic blend construction, the V Neck pullover wears like a warm blanket.  Similar to the 1/4 Zip, the cinched wrists and waist help make sure that cold doesn’t go up your back and that your grip isn’t interrupted by drooping sleeves. But the high neck makes sure your torso stays warm throughout the round.

It’s worth noting that the V Neck is my go-to option on days I know that I might be able to sneak out of the office early for a few holes, as it looks professional enough to fit perfectly in a professional setting but simultaneously allows you to swing a driver 100 MPH+ without getting weighed down or tangled up.

The Golf Gilet was the biggest surprise in the group.  While it may look like other golf vests out there, there are two aspects of the Golf Gilet that separate it from other options. While other vests often struggle to help you retain body warmth, whether from the lack of quality materials or a subpar fit, the Golf Gilet nails both of these. First, the PrimaLoft thermal layer works really well. Whether it’s windy or the temperatures are just holding in the 40s/50s, the PrimaLoft will keep your core warm without restricting your swing.

Speaking of which, the second standout feature of the Golf Gilet is the fit. Lyle & Scott strategically placed stretch fabric on the sides and near the shoulders—areas where, during the golf swing, the body needs to move and move freely to help make sure you can comfortably get into the backswing and explode through the ball with speed.

If you’ve noticed, there’s a theme here:  Lyle & Scott takes some of your favorite golf apparel pieces and enhances every one of them with high-quality materials in beautiful colorways.

Having experienced some of Lyle & Scott’s leading layering pieces, I can only imagine how well their polos, shorts, and pants fit and feel. But maybe this shouldn’t be surprising, considering that Lyle & Scott has been dressing Open Champions, Ryder Cup competitors, and other golf pros for more than 60 years.

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron.
