Despite all the craziness still going on in the world, golf (fortunately) is one of few sports that allows social distancing and, therefore, is generally permitted around the world. And in an effort to enjoy the game in a safer manner, I’ve walked almost all of my rounds so far this year—twilight nines and morning 18s.

However, none of that would be possible with the ECCO S-Three Spikeless Golf Shoes.

While I’ve had the opportunity to review spineless shoes, these were my first experience with ECCO.

Immediately apparent is the quality of the leather, which feels supple but durable. But that shouldn’t be surprising in light of the fact that ECCO controls the process and uses leather from 1 of their 4 tanneries. While the NAPPA leather is something that could be found in any of ECCO’s shoes, what makes the S-Three perfectly suited for taking the course on without a cart is the new ZONAL FLUIDFORM TECHNOLOGY.

Described in much greater detail here, the ZONAL FLUIDFORM TECHNOLOGY consists of 3 different zones with three separate levels of rigidity include:

  • Zone 1 – Comfort: the heel of the midsole is engineered for medium softness to ensure greater cushioning and comfort;
  • Zone 2 – Stability: the central part of the midsole has higher levels of rigidity to deliver lateral stability throughout the swing; and
  • Zone 3 – Flexibility: the forefront of the midsole comes with the highest level of softness for guaranteed walking comfort and flexibility.

And to help make sure the S-Three’s aren’t just comfy sneakers, ECCO’s award-winning DYNAMIC TRACTION SYSTEM (E-DTS) outsole—comprised of more than 100 traction bars and 800 traction angles—provides excellent grip in all playing conditions.

The S-Three’s were comfortable and ready to play in straight out of the box—no blisters, no foot paints, no break-in period. After lacing up in the parking lot and walking over the putting green, I could feel that the ZONAL FLUIDFORM TECHNOLOGY was cushioning each step, while also allowing my foot to flex in the midsole. This is something I can’t find in a spiked shoe due to the solid sole plate that can sometimes make a show feel as rigid as a ski boot.

The Stability Zone showcased its performance from the first tee and every time I lined up for a next shot. On the opposite end of the spectrum, spikeless shoes go too far with the comfort and have the structural support of a sandal, thereby depriving you of the ability to aggressively turn against the ground.

This was never the case with the S-THREEs.

Indeed, the combination of the Stability Zone and unique E-DTS outsole provided ample traction in the fairways, deep rough and unraked COVID bunkers. I never slipped or lost my footing whether I was aggressively turning for a big drive, walking in and out of bunkers or up and down hills while searching for rogue shots.

Generally speaking, golf shoes demand that you pick 2 of 3 attributes—comfort, traction or looks.

I never slipped or slid around once I took my stance nor did my feet hurt before, during or after walking 6,500 yards in the S-THREEs, despite sometimes trekking back-to-back days.

And while the S-THREEs certainly aren’t as flash as Koepka’s new Air Zoom Infinity Tours, they have a conservative styling that strikes a balance between reserved and athletic, which is further complemented by the fact that the advanced multi-section injection process causes the midsole of every pair of S-THREE shoes to have unique color transitions between the different sections.

So if one of the S-THREE’s colors—White, Magnet and Concrete—appeals to you, I can confidently state that ECCO delivers on all 3 fronts.
