It’s been 3 years since one of the fastest-growing direct-to-consumer golf companies hit the golf space. When Sub 70 first started, one of its flagship models was the 699’s. They have easily become their best-selling model with a solid look and forgiving design. Add in that TPE injection, and they become rocket ships for the midrange golfer. Later they introduced the 699 Pro with a thinner top line, but essentially it was the same club. One thing with Sub 70 is that they don’t push out new clubs every year because they are a smaller brand.

They believe in taking their time to release new designs so they can make sure the improvements are very noticeable, but most of all, it’s a better club. After three years, the second generation of the 699’s is here.

The new 699’s are still in the game improvement/ distance irons category. The 2-piece hollow design with an investment cast 431 stainless body remains, but It is now fitted with a 1.7mm thin S-450 aerospace steel (the steel is the same as before, but the VFT face is the new design) VFT face design for improved distance and improved distance consistency across the entire face.

They have added stronger lofts to this model. This improved loft progressions increase distances and provide more playable club-to-club distance increments throughout the set.

That all sounds really promising, and speaking from someone who has played the original 699’s from day one, I like seeing that they have built on the success of this design and put out what they believe is a true improvement to the line. I haven’t had a chance to hit them yet but the boys over at TXG have and they seemed genuinely impressed.

With the changes to the 699’s, Sub 70 has stuck to their commitment to making their clubs playable with one another. Three very playable set-matching wedges are offered – Pitch, Gap, and Sand (the Sand has CNC face milling for additional spin/control). Set-matching long irons and utility club options are also available, and for those who want a little extra flash, a black finish option is available. The V2 699’s start at just $110 per club for the satin and $120 per club for the black with the new DLC finish.

They will be available on the website starting January 2023.  If you’re interested in trying these out for yourself, check out the demo program, or if you’re local, you can book an appointment at their free-standing store called “The Seventy. “ I’ve been there before, so if you’re near Sycamore, Illinois, I strongly suggest it.

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
