The People’s Beach at Jacob Riis Park is a Hidden Gem Par-3
Remember to pack a wedge and a putter next time you trek to Rockaway Beach, New York.
Just a few steps away from the ocean (& Rockaway Bazaar), follow the path that veers off the boardwalk, and you’ll stumble on the Jacob Riiss Par-3 golf course.

The hidden gem has graced the community since 1938, making it one of the oldest public golf courses in New York City. The course is named after Jacob Riis, best known for his work as a social reformer and journalist exposing the living conditions of the poor in New York City’s slums.
Riis Park is Rockaway’s only golf course. The course is a community staple, where locals can pick up the game in a less intimidating and more approachable environment. Set off the ocean; the course is an oasis in a city full of rabid golfers.
Strong winds and spotty turf – the course’s conditions can most authentically be described as gritty. Bringing back memories of playing in your backyard, its’ many oddities add intrigue to a short course designed to be fun-first.

All things added up… Riis Park is a fitting host site for some beach-day match play, where bathing suits and backpack coolers are encouraged.
With varied hole lengths and hairy greens, the course is perfect for beginners as well as seasoned golfers scrambling for par. Play 6, 9, 12, or however many holes you want; Riis Park is as casual as they come. Take your time and enjoy the game.

If you’re coming from Manhattan or Brooklyn and don’t have a car, take the NYC Ferry (they serve drinks onboard). A shuttle will drop you off right near the course.
You can’t go wrong with any of the food vendors at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar (closest to the course). We grabbed a pre-round Pina Colada at Connolly’s Bar and then hit Ri
ppers for some boardwalk burgers and the best cheese fries known to us.

Helpful Intel: Riis Park Golf Course typically opens for the season on May 1st each year. Wedge & putter are available to rent for $7.
