The Tiger Woods hype train was huge leading up to his return but many may have actually underestimated the effect he would have on the PGA TOUR. Now the Tiger Effect is causing a real, and measurable spike in fandom.

The Tiger Effect, sometimes called overrated by some, showed up in force for the Valspar Championship, bringing in the audience for a captivating tournament. Tiger was able to draw such a big crowd at the Valspar because of it was the first time that he has been competitive in a tournament in years.

Woods was in contention almost the entire week, fanning the flames of fans who thought it could be Tiger’s time. After a strong showing in the first two rounds, Tiger came roaring back on Sunday, bringing golf fans everywhere to their living rooms on Sunday evening.

The excitement reached a high point on the 17th green when Tiger sunk a 44-foot birdie putt to get within one shot heading to 18.

While Tiger’s birdie putt and chances of victory came up short on the 18th the ratings that he brought to the Valspar Championship definitely were a win for the PGA TOUR. In fact, the Valspar Championship drew the highest TV ratings for a non-major tournament in the history of the PGA TOUR. It was 28% higher viewership than the last time Tiger was that competitive in a tournament.

And this viewership can actually be attributed almost directly to Tiger. The highest viewership for the tournament came on between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., the exact time that Tiger was making his furious push for the trophy. And the Tiger Effect is still going strong even days after the Valspar, with sports personalities still talking about Tiger’s amazing round all over talk radio shows.

With the hype for Tiger at an all time high, it will be interesting to see if the Arnold Palmer Invitational gains as much viewership. But more importantly, seeing if Tiger can compete at that level again will be worth watching.
