THUMP: Bryson DeChambeau Hammers Green With His Putter
One of the golden rules of golf is that you don’t mess with the greens unless you’re fixing a ball mark or moving an obstruction. Bryson DeChambeau pushed the limits at the WGC-Mexico with how he handled himself on the green.
DeChambeau has become a bit of a household name in recent years due to some strong performances and viral social media content. While many fans like him, there are many fans and players who don’t like his temper. Needless to say, his reaction on the green of the 14th hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec on Saturday wasn’t one for the liking.
DeChambeau had entered the third round with the 36-hole lead and then finished up with a disappointing even 71 during the third round. This placed him in a tie for fourth heading into Sunday. What really caught everyone’s attention was a three-putt bogey he had on the 14th green as he appeared to slam his putter on the green a dozen times to try and smooth out a mark. Many players and fans took to Twitter to share their displeasure.
You can actually tap stuff down legally before you putt now. https://t.co/TXXwtKwgL1

One account tweeted out asking if Bryson wanted a hammer to fix the mark and another said that he thinks DeChambeau should be locked in a room with some of the greens keepers for what he did. Lee Westwood asked why DeChambeau only hammered the green after his putt…He tweeted out that it’s perfectly legal for Bryson to do that prior to putting (which it is under new rules), but he didn’t take on the issue of how many times DeChambeau slammed his putter on the green.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Bryson has done something like this. In fact, he was caught on camera damaging a green at the WGC-Mexico this exact time last year, for which he later apologized for. It is telling and definitely interesting that Bryson seems to “lose it”, especially on the Club de Golf Chapultepec greens.
While I’m sure this is something that will blow over eventually, DeChambeau is going to have to learn to control his emotions so these outbursts don’t continue to happen. And perhaps, the first step would be to take a break from playing in Mexico.
