Tiger Considering Picking Himself For Presidents Cup

While the meat of the golfing season is over and no Ryder Cup this year, many may not be paying close attention to what happens in the golf world until next year. But Tiger Woods is doing his best to keep interest in the game up in the waning months of the year.

Even though the Ryder Cup won’t be played this year, the Presidents Cup is set to take its place in December. The captain of the United States team is none other than Tiger Woods. Typically, the captain doesn’t play in these events, as they’re usually past their primes and their game doesn’t necessarily keep up with the new wave of players. Tiger’s case is different, however, and he’s certainly keeping that in mind.

Like the Ryder Cup, eight players have already qualified for the Presidents Cup for the U.S. team, Woods not being one of them. That doesn’t mean that he won’t compete, however, as he does have four captain’s picks to appoint to the team. And Tiger admitted that he won’t rule himself out for one of those captain’s picks.

When asked about the possibility of appointing himself to the squad, Woods had this to say. “That’s up to myself and the vice-captains and eight guys [who qualified for the team],” Woods said Monday. “I’m going to keep an open line of communication with my players and my vice-captains to find the four guys that they want to go down there with and who best fits the team.”

It wouldn’t be a stretch for Tiger to pick himself as a member of the Presidents Cup squad, as he finished 13th in the qualifying rankings. But if he were to pick himself with one of his four picks, he would have to pass over one of the four other players that finished higher in qualifying than himself, including Gary Woodland, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Reed. He could also consider others further down the list.

Luckily for Tiger, he won’t have to make that decision until November and that extra golf could help him make a decision that isn’t solely based on rankings. No matter what Woods decides to do, the U.S. will hope to carry a strong squad into the matchup and take home the trophy ahead of next year’s Ryder Cup.
