Tiger Woods will be here for the weekend, and as far as we know he is doing okay. A grueling task faced the five-time champion on Friday morning, as he was required to close out his Thursday round, playing the last four holes before quickly turning it around and heading out for round two.

He was on the precipice of another Masters record and showed a deft touch, impressive short game and a good driver to steer him around in 72-73, a very steady entry for the opening 36 holes. The cut line moving up towards even par was never in question – it was only how far down it would go as the weather became more challenging. Sir Nick Faldo remarked in the commentary booth that he had ever seen conditions like it.

Tiger appeared measured and happy after his round, eclipsing Freddie Couples and Gary Player by making 24 consecutive cuts at the Masters. His active streak runs from 1997 to present, and he will always make the gargantuan effort to be fit enough to play competitively here, the tournament clearly means a lot to him. He wasn’t overly reflective on the colossal achievement in his post-round interview, referring more to the task ahead and whether he could gain a few shots on the leaders. At +1 and seven back, Tiger certainly isn’t out of it.

Tiger said:

“I’ve always loved playing here. I’ve been able to play here since I was 19 years old. It’s one of the honours I don’t take lightly. There’s such an aura and mystique about playing this golf course.”

With only 24 holes under his belt to date so far, the list of golfers Tiger beat this week is staggering. He made four birdies on Friday and the crucial aspect of his game was keeping the double bogeys off the card.

Three-time US Mid-Am champion Stewart Hagestad said:

“These are the best players in the world. Just look at what Tiger is doing right now. The guy has barely played at all in the last calendar year, and he’s 1-over. That’s alien stuff. That’s unbelievable.”
