Tiger Woods Commits To Play In The Genesis Invitational

Perhaps the greatest golfer who ever lived, depending on who you ask, Tiger Woods, will be teeing it up next week in Los Angeles for the Genesis Invitational.

For the first time since his appearance at St. Andrews for the Open Championship last July, Tiger Woods will be playing competitive golf. While the Open was his last tournament appearance, Woods only appeared in majors last year, playing at Augusta in April for the Masters, at Southern Hills in Oklahoma for the PGA Championship, and the Open at St. Andrews.

Woods said on Twitter, “I’m ready to play an ACTUAL PGA Tour event next week,” then tagged the Genesis Invitational’s official account.

The fifteen-time Major winner said at the Hero World Challenge last year that he would try to make appearances at those tournaments, with perhaps a few additional ones on his slate for the 2023 season.

Woods said (via CBS Sports):

“The goal is to play just the major championships and maybe one or two more.”

After the various injuries Woods has encountered over his 27-year professional career, along with all the other things he has dealt with, from a car accident near this event two years ago to various surgeries and repairs, he has come to terms with the fact that, physically, he does not have much more to give.

He added:

“That’s it. I mean, that’s physically that’s all I can do. I told you that, guys, you know, the beginning of this year, too. I don’t have much left in this leg, so gear up for the biggest ones, and hopefully, you know, lightning catches in a bottle, and I’m up there in contention with a chance to win, and hopefully, I remember how to do that.”

As far as other non-Major events Woods will play in this year, there is no indication of what he’ll end up doing, where he’ll be, or how many tournaments he’ll actually end up entering. For now, we’ll just have to wait and let the Big Cat decide for himself. One thing is for sure, the competitive spirit is still there.

Inspired by the likes of Woods, Palmer, McIlroy, and Koepka, Joey plays over 100 times a year in the South Central Pennsylvania area. When he isn't golfing, he is probably thinking about golfing, but he might be watching other sports, writing, or playing poker.
