Tiger Woods is Considering Making a Putter Change

For all of the hype that has surrounded Tiger Woods this year, there haven’t been any big results to live up to his return. But Woods may soon take action to change that.

Looking for the answers that will help him win more events, and ultimately another major, Tiger is reportedly considering a major equipment change. With his putting falling short for most of the year, Woods is now considering using a mallet putter to see if that helps anything. It would be a drastic move for Woods, who has never used that model consistently in PGA TOUR events.

Media first got wind of Woods’ impending decision this week at TPC Potomac when he was practicing with a TaylorMade Ardmore 3 slant-neck model.

Woods addressed the questions, stating he wants to see how it rolls. “I kept saying that I wanted something with more swing than mine,” he said. “I like feeling like that toe is moving and swinging, but this one has a fraction more swing than mine does.”

It may be an understatement to say that a putter switch would be drastic for Tiger. In 13 of his 14 major championship victories, Woods has used his reliable Scotty Cameron Newport 2 model. And while he has used other putter styles in the past, it would be one of the only times he hasn’t used an Anser-style head.

While it may seem like a dramatic change to make, Tiger does have to do something about his putting. After needing 58 putts to get through two rounds at the U.S. Open, he now ranks 89th in strokes gained so something obviously has to be done. And if Tiger feels more comfortable with a new style, that could be the key to his success.

Woods hasn’t made a final decision yet but will decide what putter to use at the Quicken Loans National this weekend. We’ll certainly be interested to see how he performs with whichever club he’s putting with.
