John Daly is Arguing with USGA Over His Desire to Use a Golf Cart
Ever since jumping back into golf on the Senior Tour, John Daly has been just as big of a hit among fans as he was in the past. Now, Daly is back in the news but this time it’s for bickering with the USGA.
Daly has been dealing with a multitude of injuries this year, both in his knee and his shoulder. The ailments caused Big John to withdraw from the PGA Tour of Champions last October after he collapsed due to complications with his right knee.
After that incident, he was in a traffic accident in his RV that caused more damage to his knee. On top of that, a shoulder injury caused him to withdraw from an event last month.
Despite the injuries, Daly was still planning on participating in the Senior Open Championship. To participate, Daly petitioned the USGA to use a golf cart to relieve pressure on his knee. The USGA, however, denied this request, citing that Daly did not provide additional information as requested.
The decision has rattled Daly, especially since another player, Scott Verplank, was granted a cart.
Unfortunately— I had to WD from the US SENIOR OPEN. The deteriorating osteoarthritis isn’t helping my rt knee. I fall under the @ADANational but @USGA turned down a cart for me this week. Just going to give the knee a rest. Don’t know what’s ahead for me. https://t.co/Bna5maK13P

Daly took to Twitter to voice his frustrations after being forced to withdraw from the event, claiming that the USGA did not ask for further information, which he claimed he would have provided. “I ‘WD’ bc @USGA had already made their decision after our exhaustive medical submission,” Daly tweeted out. “Any claim to the contrary is pure fiction.”
The official USGA rule states that the association complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, granting carts during events for participants that are hindered by disability, taking each decision case by case. And with how Daly’s medical history has been in the past year, it would seem like he would qualify for a golf cart under these guidelines.
HUGE shout out to #DrJFackler @MethodistHosp & staff!! One of the greatest facilities I’ve ever been!! Took best care of me & trying to get the right knee back. I should know in a few days how I’m feeling. Thank you to everyone who reached out! #PRP #Synviscone #sportsmedicine pic.twitter.com/g0paDIp1iI

While we can’t be certain if Daly’s knee injury requires a golf cart on the course, we are sad that he won’t be able to compete in the tournament. Hopefully, with some rest, Daly will be back walking the links in no time.
