Tiger Woods’ Power Behind the Scenes Grows With New Board Position

The PGA Tour announced late Wednesday that a board of directors for the for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises has been created

The six golfers who are on the PGA Tour policy board were named to this new board, along with former PGA Tour player Joe Ogilvie.

That puts seven golfers on the 13-member board, giving them the majority say when it comes to voting power.

Speaking of power, word going around Bay Hill for this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida, is that Tiger Woods is enjoying his role on the policy board, and his voice and influence behind the scenes is growing with this announcement.

Rickie Fowler told Golf Channel on Thursday:

“We need Tiger on our side, and I feel we’ve all been, somewhat, on the same page. None of us would ever want to try to go against what Tiger would ever want to say or do, because that’s an uphill, losing battle. I appreciate everything he’s done to put us in the position we’re in.”

Having Woods as a prominent voice in the future direction of the PGA Tour should create unity among the players. After all, he will play a key part in the decision whether or not to move forward and finalize the framework agreement with the Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Webb Simpson, who is also on the PGA Tour policy board and this new board of directors, said:

“To have him in this role shows how much he cares, how much he realizes the PGA Tour and the game of golf is in a very pivotal stage, for all the obvious reasons. I’m sure he wants to make his mark for setting the Tour up for the best future possible.”

Along with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, the other four members on the new board of directors come from Strategic Sports Group, the consortium that is funding PGA Tour Enterprises.
