Tiger Woods Vs. Phil Mickelson: For $10 Million Dollars

Every sport seems to have its heavyweight battle that takes place during every era. Basketball has Bird vs. Magic, boxing had Ali vs. Frazier, now golf looks like it will have Tiger vs. Lefty.

Rumors surfaced last night that the two golf giants were in negotiations for a one-on-one battle over 18 holes with the winner taking home a whopping $10 million. For those wondering if they’ll be able to see the action, the deal is supposedly ready-made for TV and at least one major network would broadcast the event.

As for the location of this 18-hole battle, there has been nothing confirmed but rumors say that it will take place somewhere in the Las Vegas area, possibly Shadow Creek. And the timing of the event is also up in the air. Mickelson is quoted as saying that he thought this event would have happened on July 3rd but it simply didn’t come together.

The excitement around this event is palpable. Woods and Mickelson are the two biggest names in golf over the past two decades and there were always rumors that they didn’t like each other, even though both have dismissed those rumors. Mickelson says he’ll have to watch his smack talk against Woods because of their careers. “Whether it’s 14 majors, 79 wins, however many players of the year awards, FedEx Cups, the whole deal,” Phil said. “He owns all the trump cards.”

While Phil may be right and Tiger carries some of the trump cards in their head to head matchup, Phil does have some advantages on Tiger. Phil has won more recently at the WGC-Mexico this year and also has more career top-ten finishes than Tiger on the PGA TOUR. Both have made a ridiculous amount of money in their careers, however, with Tiger sitting around $112 million and Phil at $88 million.

Regardless of how good you feel each golfer is now, this is going to be must-see TV for anyone who follows the sport. I won’t even wager a guess of who would win but I know it will be one heck of a battle between these two legends.
