Top 10 Golf Movies of All Time
We all know the feeling…
You’re flipping through the channels looking for something halfway entertaining when all of a sudden you land on a classic golf flick and BLAMO there goes your whole afternoon. It’s nothing to feel bad about; these timeless classics are a guilty pleasure for the golfer in all of us. So with that said, to help curate your movie experience, we left the clubs in the trunk for a few days and spent some quality couch time with Murray, Sandler, Dangerfield, and Costner in an effort to select the top 10 golf movies of all time. Here’s what we came up with:
10. A Gentleman’s Game (2001- R)
In this 2001 sports drama a young boy’s summer job as a caddy at an exclusive country club teaches him a valuable lesson in the differences between the “haves” and “have-nots.”
Mason Gamble stars as Timmy, a 13-year old boy with the prospect of becoming an amazing young golfer. With the help of his father, Timmy begins learning the game by caddying for some of the town’s best players, as well as a few average Joes along the way. Taken under the wing of a former golf professional (Gary Sinise), Timmy undergoes a crash course in both life and golf.

8. Dead Solid Perfect (1998- NR)
This 1988 HBO film starring Randy Quaid follows a struggling golfer as he travels the country on his quest to make it big on the PGA TOUR. Sorry, this flick was a bit obscure so we couldn’t find any video previews for this one.
7. Seven Days in Utopia (2011 – G)
Robert Duvall stars in this 2011 adaptation from Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, a book by David L. Cook. The story begins with an embarrassing tournament loss that leads to a public meltdown for pro golfer Luke Chisholm (Lucas Black), who proceeds to make things worse by driving his car through a fence in Utopia, Texas. The fence happens to be on the property of Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall), a rancher and former touring golfer who decides to help Luke with his dilemma by taking him under his wing.

6. Greatest Game Ever Played (2005 – PG)
This film grants viewers with a bit of a golf history lesson as the story follows the unlikely success of a working class boy and his desire to show off his talent among top golf professionals. Starring Shia LaBeouf and Bill Paxton, the Greatest Game Ever Played is a truly uplifting underdog story.
The Greatest Game Ever Played [Trailer]
A golf drama based on the true story of the 1913 US Open, where 20-year-old Francis Ouimet defeated his idol, 1900 US Open champion, Englishman, Harry Vardon. Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Stephen Dillane and Elias Koteas
5. Caddyshack 2 (1998 – R)
Deemed by some as one of the worst sequels to a fantastic movie, Caddyshack 2 is still worth a watch for its endlessly steady stream of slapstick hilarity. Quaid, Mason, Chase, and Aykroyd bring together all the quirkiness we love about the original and added a few new laughs to keep the Caddyshack franchise alive a bit longer.

4. The Legend Of Bagger Vance (2000 – PG-13)
Matt Damon and Will Smith combine forces to produce a heart-warming story of personal fulfillment and triumph over life’s many obstacles. The film was certainly not a financial success, grossing only $30 million and falling far short of its $60 million budget, but we’re sure any true golfer will have a soft spot for this one.
Legend of Bagger Vance Trailer
Movie: The Legend of Bagger Vance Release Date: 3rd November 2000 Character: Bagger Vance Plot: Rannulph Junnah is the best golfer in Savannah. He’s living well and has a girl, Adele Invergordon, who’s the daughter of a wealthy landowner. The First World War starts, though, and Junnah goes to Europe to fight.
3. Tin Cup (1996 – R)
Easily one of Kevin Costner’s greatest roles; up there with other modern classics like Robinhood and The Bodyguard, Tin Cup is filled with laughs, drama, and romance. Cheech Marin also lends his comedic talent and Don Johnson offers a great performance as fictional PGA all-star David Simms. Rene Russo plays Simm’s girlfriend, a lovable side-kick who becomes involved with Costner after she catches his eye during a golf lesson. We won’t give away any more but if you haven’t seen this one yet take the night off and rent it.
Tin Cup Trailer -1996-
2. Happy Gilmore (1996 – PG-13)
Credited as one of Adam Sandler’s most memorable performances as well as the founding of the “running start golf swing,” seen attempted by frat boys and beer soaked golfers everywhere. The movie depicts Happy’s quest to beat rival Shooter McGavin (Christopher MacDonald) with the help of his one-handed golf coach “Chubbs” (Carl Weathers). Perhaps the most unforgettable scene is the profanity riddled confrontation between Happy and Bob Barker (playing himself). Oh, and the hottie who plays Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest, is none other than Julie Bowen from the current prime time hit Modern Family. Bet you didn’t see that one coming. Either way this cult-status flick has left generations of young golfers quoting its punch lines ad nauseam.

1. Caddyshack (1980 – R)
A true classic. Combine the comedic talents of Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase and what you end up with is simply the best golf movie ever made. With countless memorable lines, and outfits that epitomized everything we loved about the 80s, this flick is as good as it gets. Go ahead; try NOT to do your Bill Murray “it’s in the hole” impression. It’s unavoidable.
