Tournament Preview: The BMW Championship (Sept 6 -Sept 10)

The BMW ChampionshipRound 3 of the FedEx Cup Playoffs will kick off Thursday September 6 with the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club, a Pete Dye course located in Carmel, Indiana.  Dye lives on the 18th hole of this course, so you could say he knows the course very well.

The par-72 track is a popular one with tighter fairways and newly added fairway bunkers and measures 7,205 yards; a length that is considered average by today’s standards.  The greens measure at 4,500 square feet which equals the area of putting surface at TPC Sawgrass, another Dye well known creation.  Accuracy and distance control are key factors in playing this course and a short game pro may come out on top.

Thirty players of the 70  in this week’s field will advance to the Tour Championship, where one player will emerge as FedEx Cup Player of the Year and take home the coveted $10 million dollar prize.

Weather conditions are calling for some precipitation and wind up until the weekend rounds.  Hurricane Isaac remnants still linger around the area as well.

Keep your eyes on the red hot Rory McIlroy, who is the best player in the World by a long stretch.  Tiger Woods has learned how to putt on the weekend and Dustin Johnson is beginning to look like an animal on the course.  All being Ryder Cup picks, these guys should have no problem at Crooked Hill if they play the game they brought last week at TPC Boston.

Louis Oosthuizen is bound to win a tournament this year with the tremendous game he has put together.  The 2-time runner up has a determination to finish a Sunday atop the leaderboard.   Jeff Overton is a hometown hero and is no stranger to Crooked Stick, so don’t be surprised if you see him in the top 10.
