Tournament Preview: Waste Management Phoenix Open

One of the biggest non-major tournaments of the year is upon us, the Waste Management Phoenix Open aka the People’s Open Championship.

This years field in the event has the second strongest field in the history of the event with 18 of the top 30 players in the world, according to the Official World Golf Rankings, playing this week.

Brooks Koepka will be looking to defend his 2021 title while Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Hideki Matsuyama are all in the field and also in the top 10 in the world.

Louis Oosthuizen and Bubba Watson will be making their first starts on the PGA TOUR of the season this week. Other notables in the field include Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Daniel Berger, Tony Finau, Harris English, Abe Ancer, Sungjae Im, Billy Horschel, Talor Gooch, Kevin Kisner, Russell Henley, Seamus Power and Tom Hoge.

Koepka will try to become the second ever back to back champion in the event. Matsuyama has been the only person to accomplish this feat back in 2016 and 2017.

Koepka and Matsuyama will be looking to join the short list of three time Waste Management Open Champions comprised of Phil Mickelson, Mark Calcavecchia, Gene Littler, and Arnold Palmer.
