It was a great finish to a windy tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina with Graeme McDowell grabbing 500 FedExCup points as he climbs to No. 6 overall in the 2013 FedEx Cup standings. McDowell has had a decent year so far on TOUR with four top-10 finishes in seven events played in 2013.

Prior to the win, McDowell sat at No. 50 in the standings and hadn’t won a tournament since the 2011 U.S Open. With this win McDowell moves within 902 points from current FedExCup leader Tiger Woods and by moving into the coveted top 10 in FedEx points Graeme is exactly where you want to be come playoff time.

“I’ve been working my ass off since September of 2011 to get over the U.S. Open hangover and everything that goes with it,” Graeme McDowell said Sunday night at the RBC Heritage, beer in hand. “This has been a work in progress for two years.”

McDowell defeated Webb Simpson in a one-hole playoff at Harbour Town on Sunday in what looked like a scene out of Wizard of Oz.  The swirling “tornado like” winds shifted the leaderboard in the playoff contender’s favor as others fell off shot by shot.

The two leaders finished 9-under at the end of the final round as McDowell made his only bogey of the day on the 18th hole to move into a tie with Webb Simpson.  Graeme quickly emerged as the winner after parring the same hole in the playoff as Webb Simpson couldn’t answer.

Webb earned 300 FedExCup points for his second-place finish, moving him up 21 spots to No. 11 in the standings.

Afterwards Graeme commented on his progress since last year’s decent season, “I took a lot of confidence from (the World Challenge), because I had a solid season last year and got nothing from it. We’ll all sit here and say you can’t measure yourself by wins … it’s about the upper curve and getting better and all these things. What it really boils down to, wins are very, very important to us personally. And you take a huge amount of confidence and belief and momentum from those.”

Current FedEx Cup Leaderboard for the 2013 season:

  1. Tiger Woods, 1,740 points
  2. Brandt Snedeker, 1,397
  3. Matt Kuchar, 1,069
  4. Kevin Streelman, 915
  5. Adam Scott, 870
  6. Graeme McDowell, 838
  7. Phil Mickelson 813
  8. Dustin Johnson, 810
  9. Steve Stricker, 795
  10. Russell Henley, 775
