While the official status of the 2020 Ryder Cup—which is scheduled to be held between Friday, September 25th and Sunday, September 27th and hosted by Whistling Straits—still remains in flux, that doesn’t mean you can’t get together with your golfing crew and have your own Ryder Cup competition.

Destination Kohler has opened all four of its championship golf courses designed by the legendary Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, along with lodging accommodations at The American Club Carriage House, Inn on Woodlake, Sandhill and Red Fox.

While “Diabolical Dye” needs no introduction, Kohler’s four championship golf courses—The Straits and The Irish at Whistling Straits, and the The River and The Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run—are all ranked among the best in the United States by leading golf publications. Indeed, Kohler’s four tournament-tested championship courses have hosted three PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open and two U.S. Women’s Opens.

Starting with Whistling Straits’ flagship course, The Straits course is known for its open, rugged and windswept terrain that brings to mind ancient seaside links courses of the United Kingdom and Ireland with eight holes hugging Lake Michigan, a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep, elevation changes of approximately 80 feet, and three stone bridges.

The walking-only, links-style course, which measures in at 7,790 yards from the tips, is sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and boasts a list of accolades nearly as long: No. 3 in Golf Digest’s 2019/2020 America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, No. 5 in GolfWeek’s 2018 Best Resort Courses, and No. 21 in Golf Digest’s 2019/2020 America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

The Irish, which measures in at a more tame 7,201 yards, features an inland grass-and-dune layout with bentgrass fairways and greens which provide a softer playing surface than the Straits Course. But that doesn’t mean the little brother is a pushover, as the fairways on The Irish aren’t as wide as the Straits Course and water comes into play on a handful of the holes.

Similarly, The Irish has also garnered its share of awards—ranked #39 in GolfWeek’s 2018 Best Resort Courses and No. 43 in Golf Digest’s 2019/2020 America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses—showing that it shouldn’t be overlooked.

And while Whistling Straits has become a household name for the more dedicated, Blackwolf Run is by no means a facility that gets lost in its brother’s shadow. Indeed, the course honors its namesake—Chief Blackwolf and his Winnebago tribe who resided in the Sheboygan River Valley more than two centuries ago—has hosted a number of professional championships, including the Andersen Consulting World Golf Championships in 1995, 1996 and 1997, as well as the U.S. Women’s Open in 1998 and 2012.

Described by GOLF Magazine as a course that “must be considered the nation’s finest public-access course of modern times,” The River is known for its target landing areas, strategic bunkering, large undulating greens, and water or gorges on 14 of the 18 holes. The unique design features have, likewise, helped The River amass its share of accolades, including being ranked No. 15 in Golf Digest’s 2019/2020 America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses and No. 22 in GolfWeek’s 2018 Best Resort Courses.

Notably, all four courses are currently open and following guidelines on the golf course that have become standard: sanitizer at the first tee, caddies wearing masks, pins left in, objects at bottom of the cups, etc.

With respect to accommodations, each of the currently available options will impress.

The American Club Carriage House provides guests with a variety of room types and amenities to create and enjoy an experience that is tailored to their personal notion of wellness. Amenities range from complimentary access to yoga, indoor cycling and fitness to cold-pressed juices, superfoods and outdoor adventures at River Wildlife.

The Inn on Woodlake is located on the shore of picturesque Wood Lake, where the serene, 138-room hotel boasts boutique-style guest rooms and 10 multi-bedroom suites, making it perfect for groups, families and, of course, golf outings.

Sandhill is a perfectly secluded retreat, surrounded by nature and brimming with charm, making it perfect for guests who appreciate nature and tranquility. Nestled on 350 acres in the wilderness of Mosel, Wisconsin, the private cabin is close enough to enjoy the amenities of The American Club (10-minute drive), yet far enough away to consider it your very own corner of the universe.

Finally, the Red Fox: a three level cabin with an outdoor firepit and patio that overlooks the scenic Sheboygan River. The cabin is designed to be a “home away from home” and features three full bedrooms, five gas fireplaces, a chef-inspired kitchen, two full bathrooms and a lower-level rec room. Guests at Red Fox are provided access to all of the amenities of Sports Core Health & Racquet Club and River Wildlife private wilderness reserve and lodge restaurant and a range of year-round recreational activities.

In some, there is something for literally everyone at Destination Kohler: from coastal, championship courses and private cabins to picturesque, inland courses that provide a unique experience with activities for the whole family.

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron. And despite living in NYC, Eric makes it a priority to work on his game and fitness during the week, along with a round or two over the weekend.
