Next week all of professional golf’s finest will converge on Augusta National to compete in the first major of the 2018 season. But one former can’t miss prospect will be using the time to work his way back into the elite of the golf world.

Ty Tryon was once dubbed as a phenom coming onto the PGA TOUR, earning his professional card in 2001 via a qualifying tournament as a 16-year old high school junior. The potential and expectations for Tryon at the professional level were uncapped, especially when he joined the Tour as a full professional in 2003 at just 18 years of age.

Everything went downhill from there for Tryon. In 2003, he made only 4 cuts in 21 events before finishing just inside the top 200 for the money list on the Web.com Tour in 2004. After that, Tryon only played in 15 events from 2005 to 2012, making three cuts, and earning no victories.

After a missed cut in the summer of 2012, Tryon left the Tour and stayed away from golf.

Stepping away from the PGA TOUR allowed Tryon to focus on other aspects of his life. “I did some stay-at-home dad, I supported my wife’s work, I worked at a country club for about a year,” Tryon said. “I started teaching locally, teaching foreign kids, went to China for about a year and a half. I caddied for players on different amateur circuits and in professional tournaments, was a coach and caddie – multi-tool worker, you can call it – kind of like you’re someone’s guardian, for younger players, ages 16 to 23. Quite a bit in China.”

Tryon decided to make a professional golf comeback after Thanksgiving in 2016. He has been working hard and that culminated in earning his first spot in a PGA TOUR-sponsored event since 2012. To qualify, Tryon shot a 5-under 67 at The Landings Club. The performance secured him a spot in a Florida Elite Golf Tour event that he’ll play in on Monday that will hopefully earn him a spot in the North Mississippi Classic next month.

While the road has been long and hard for Tryon since he was proclaimed a prodigy, it’s great to see him making his way back up the ranks. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing the former star pupil back in the big leagues very soon.
