In 2021, Tyrrell Hatton shot a final round of 68, finishing T-18 at The Masters and giving hope for an even better showing in the future.

In 2022, Hatton shot a final round of 80 and finished 52, and last for the weekend qualifiers above the cut line. When asked about his play, Hatton went on to rip the course.

Hatton stated, When you are clearly bottom of the field during the weekend, even if I feel like I’ve hit good shots out there, I’ve not been rewarded for them, so it’s a case of just lose a bit of interest.”

Clearly emotional amid a tough showing at the first Major of the 2022 season, Hatton did not hold back when asked about an explanation for his poor final two rounds.

The Englishman went on to say, “If you hit a good shot, you should end up near the hole, not then short-sided into a bunker because of the slopes that they’ve created and stuff.

Elaborating on his prior comments, Hatton stated, “With how it runs off the greens here and the slopes that you are then chipping into and how obviously it’s cut, it just makes it really hard to even get chip shots close. I think everything is exaggerated here.”

Tyrrell Hatton was captured on video at The Masters this year showing his frustration. After an errant tee shot on the par 5 13th hole, Hatton was shown on a quickly cut broadcast slamming his driver after pulling his tee shot into the foliage lining the left side.

Hatton was also captured on video on the same hole, seemingly frustrated in the midst of carding an 8. Immediately following his 6th shot, Hatton appeared to use his putter to mimic shooting as he blankly and angrily stomped off into the distance.

In this case and in a certain sense, Hatton is just like one of us with his very relatable emotional response to frustration. A frustrating round could ignite the urge to fire a club into the turf, so in a way Hatton’s emotional response to the fun of golf is also relatable.

What do you think? Is Hatton a raving lunatic, or is he just feeling the effects of this very frustrating game at the highest level of competition?
