The golf world was caught off guard a few weeks ago when news broke that there could be a new Premier Golf League (PGL) forming to challenge the PGA TOUR. While the PGA TOUR has issued a tough message to its players to avoid the league, it’s top superstar has already confirmed he’s been approached.

With the PGA TOUR heading to Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Open, more media attention than usual is being paid to Tiger Woods. Not only is he the host of the event, he will also playing for a record-setting 83rd tournament win. Thus far, he talk of the tournament has been what Woods had to say about the potential start-up, PGL.

“Have I been personally approached? Yes, and my team’s been aware of it and we’ve delved into the details of it and trying to figure it all out, just like everyone else,” said Woods. “We’ve been down this road before with World Golf Championships and other events being started. There’s a lot of information that we’re still looking at and whether it’s reality or not, but just like everybody else, we’re looking into it.”

It must be worrisome to the PGA TOUR that Tiger potentially would be interested in sponsoring and joining this new group. But as Woods said, this is far from a done deal. The potential founders of the PGL have already stated that they would like to partner with the PGA TOUR and European Tour, however, both of those organizations have shunned the idea. With that said, it could end up going the route of the World Golf Championships and be integrated into one or both of these already existing tours.

The PGL seems like an attractive option for many players as it would allow the best golfers in the world to play on a more consistent basis, rather than playing with guys who are not at the same talent level. On top of that, the proposed PGL would have 18 tournaments with purses of at least $10 million apiece. That’s certainly a big incentive to break away from the PGA TOUR if they refuse to work together.

If the PGL comes to fruition, it wouldn’t kick off until 2022 at the earliest; putting no immediate threat for anyone or any organization at the moment. Now, if Tiger and others start to show interest in the coming months, this could be a game changing story to pay close attention to.
