UNREAL | Jon Rahm Defeats Dustin Johnson in a Playoff for the BMW Championship Title

What. A. Tournament. The second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs was decided in a playoff, where Jon Rahm captured his 2nd victory since the re-start, winning the 2020 BMW Championship.

Dustin Johnson’s tee shot on the playoff hole got a VERY friendly bounce, while Rahm’s found the right hand rough. DJ’s approach found the green, nearly 33 feet away from the hole. He seemed to have the advantage, as Jon was only able to get his approach to 66 feet. Then. It happened. One of the craziest putts I’ve ever seen in my life. And it was to win a playoff event. UNREAL. A winding, breaking, curving, diving, 66 foot putt. And Rahm DROPPED it. Right in the heart. Right in DJ’s heart.

Jon Rahm struggled the first few days of play, but then put his game into another gear. He entered the weekend at +6, then went 66, 64 on one of the hardest courses the guys have played all year. Olympia Fields CC was playing like a major championship, but Rahm made it look like child’s play over the weeked. Rahm seemingly turned his tournament around after receiving a 1-stroke penalty for failing to mark his ball on the green, which may be the most relatable penalty stroke of all time. He ranked 2nd in greens in regulation, hitting nearly 71% of them. He was ranked inside the Top 10 on the greens, as he gained 3.9 strokes putting. With the win, Rahm moves to 2nd in the FedEx Cup standings, and will start the TOUR Championship at -8.

Dustin Johnson was in complete control of the tournament early on Sunday, and it seemed to be his to lose. Everything in his game is working right now, including his putter. When DJ makes putts, only a few guys on TOUR have the firepower to keep up with him. His putter was what got him in the playoff, as he made a 45 footer on his 72nd hole. DJ still sits in a great position for Atlanta, and will start -10.

World Best Player Finishes

  • Rory McIlroy – T12
  • Justin Thomas – T25
  • Xander Schauffele – T25
  • Tiger Woods – T51 (Will miss ATL)

WEEK: +155

Next week, the 2020 season comes to an “end”. The TOUR Championship in Atlanta will consist of the Top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings. Remember, the format changed last year, and Dustin Johnson will start the week with a 2 stroke advantage.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
