US Open Pairings – Mixing LIV & PGA

Some pairings of note for Thursday and Friday!

Despite all the hype around the LIV Series and the defectors, I don’t expect much tension between the players this week. Maybe some of the pairings were set up in a way that the issue could be discussed between players, but at the end of the day, the ball is still round, the fans still love Phil, and everyone is there to try and win. Except maybe Fran Quinn. He will be soaking it up whether he shoots 70 or 90.

Defending champion Jon Rahm is playing with two-time major champ Collin Morikawa. The two major champions may choose to quiz their third player, 2021 US Amateur Champion James Piot, about his choice to play in the LIV Series.

Shane Lowry is sandwiched between two of the LIV frontmen, Phil & Oosthuizen, who was asked a few probing questions in an interview today about his decision to play golf elsewhere. Hopefully, Shane just continues to smile and hit rhythmic flop shots.

Justin Thomas and Tony Finau saw plenty of one another last week at the Canadian Open and will be playing together again tomorrow, joined by Viktor Hovland in search of his maiden major.

A notable power group includes Koepka, Cam Smith, and Scottie Scheffler. Three of the best players in the world, and two in a great vein of form while Koepka remains the man to beat across the US Open format.

Par 70, tough set-up, tight greens, high rough, tension flowing (instigated by everyone with a microphone) between the PGA pros and the LIV defectors. Fans in droves, the top players in the world all vying for the trophy. It’s US Open week.

Patrick joined us in May 2022 with a strong passion for the game and a writing style to match. He is a good golfer, originally from Cumbria in the UK, and now living in British Columbia, Canada. He focuses on writing opinion pieces while keeping up to date with LIV Golf, Tour events and Major championships, providing good insights into the professional game. His best golf memories are shooting 72 with a double on 18, running the Golf Society at Lancaster University, and steering them to the first ever Varsity win against rivals York. His favorite club is his Scotty Cameron Newport 2.0, and his favorite event is the Masters!
