Vice Golf Debuts Irons, Wedges, and Putters

Vice Golf is one of the original direct-to-consumer (DTC) golf ball brands and will enter the golf equipment marketplace starting this year.

With a lineup that consists of two different irons, a triple forged wedge, and two putters, Vice is looking to break into what has become a very crowded (and competitive) DTC marketplace that brands like Sub70, New Level, and Takomo have come to dominate.

As a result, it becomes absolutely necessary to do something different to set yourself apart, whether that’s quality, price, or something else. Vice, however, true to its brand ethos, looks to do something by offering quality products that also come with a little flair and customization not available from the competition.

Specifically, regardless of which product you’re interested in, everything comes with some form of customization, whether it’s changing the entire head color or unique color accenting and ferrules.

So now to dive into the details of what is actually being offered. Starting with the irons, Vice is offering two flavors: VGI01 (pictured above) and VGI02 (pictured below). The former is forged iron that is available in 4 (21°) through Pitching Wedge (46°) and features a muscle back positioned on the lower half of the club (likely to help promote launch). The latter is a performance iron that features a 2-piece head with a hot, high-speed face, which is available in 5 (21.5°) through Sand Wedge (54°).

What is noteworthy about both irons is that they are customizable. The heads can be optioned with a color accenting—Black, White, Lime, and Purple, among others—as well as different model and color shafts, grips, and ferrules.

The VGI01’s design reminds me of another recently released iron: the Bettinardi MB24, which also features a pronounced muscle back on the lower half of the club head.

Vice’s wedge, conversely, only comes in one variation: the VGW01, which is made with triple-forged carbon steel and comes with full-face grooves in three different lofts—50, 56, and 60. Like Vice’s irons, the VGW01 wedges can also be customized with a variety of color accenting, shafts, grips, and ferrules, but there do not appear to be any grind or bounce variations.

The VGW01 looks great, and a forged wedge for under $200 is a steal, but what caught my attention is a unique design feature (the notched rear section) that reminds me of another forged wedge: the Honma T//World, specifically the W4 wedges.

Finally, Vice’s putters: the VGP01 blade and VGP02 mallet. Vice’s blade (which looks more like a mid-mallet) is made of 100% forged steel that is CNC milled for optimized weight (390g).

The mallet also starts life as 100% forged steel that is CNC milled, albeit into a more familiar Batwing shape. Unlike the blade, the mallet is a multi-piece design that helps increase MOI. Like irons and wedges, both putters benefit from custom finishes and can be customized with different weight and length shafts, as well as some unique grips.

It’s worth noting that Vice didn’t just start drawing on paper and say, “Yeah, that looks good, so let’s go sell it.”

Instead, Vice partnered with HIO Fitting, one of Europe’s top custom club fitters and builders, to evaluate data and refine a product that offers measurable performance advantages.

Vice’s irons, wedges, and putters are all for sale right now. Subject to options, the VGI01 and VGI02 irons will retail at $164.99 and $144.99, respectively, the VGI01 wedges at $164.99, and VGP01 blade and VGP02 mallet at $269.99 and $319.99, respectively.

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron. And despite living in NYC, Eric makes it a priority to work on his game and fitness during the week, along with a round or two over the weekend. Fortunately, he’s got a very understanding fiancé who (for the time being) accepts him and his obsession. Follow Eric on IG @hozel_rocket.
