Vin Scully, universally praised as one of the best sports broadcasters ever, died on Tuesday at the age of 94.

Scully spent 67 years calling Los Angeles Dodgers games, and his voice is a part of some of the biggest moments in baseball history—including Kirk Gibson’s home run in the 1988 World Series (“in a season of the improbable, the impossible has happened”) and Mookie Wilson’s game-winner for the Mets in the 1986 World Series on one of the most infamous errors of all time (“behind the bag, it gets through Buckner. Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!”).

Longtime fans, however, may remember that Scully called golf for CBS from 1975-82. In order to show you just how good he was at announcing golf—not a huge surprise there—check out this clip from the 1981 Heritage Golf Classic at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Rik Massengale had won three PGA Tour events at that time, but this wasn’t one of his better moments on the course. But what made it memorable was how Scully narrated what was possibly the worst hole of Massengale’s career.

So while Scully will forever be linked with the game of baseball, this video proves that he was a great broadcaster—period.

Chris has worked in sports journalism for nearly 20 years and also loves the game of golf, even though it often doesn't love him back. Year-round golf is a perk of living in Florida, where Chris moved from his native New York shortly after graduating from college. Chris has played some famous courses in the state, including Bay Hill in Orlando and Innisbrook in the Tampa Bay area, and next on his to-do list is the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to take a crack at the famous island hole.
