PGA TOUR Signature Event Gets New Name and New Location
A PGA TOUR signature event is getting a fresh start.
The Wells Fargo Championship, which was formerly known as the Wachovia Championship and the Quail Hollow Championship, will now be known as the Truist Championship starting in 2025 after the Charlotte-based bank declined the option to extend its sponsorship contract with the tournament.
Wells Fargo has been mulling the option to keep the namesake of the signature event, which offers increased prize money and a more enriched player field, for months. It ultimately decided to back out of its potential continuation to keep sponsoring the tournament.
It will also leave Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, where the tournament is most frequently played, although it has extended to other courses over the years temporarily.
The Truist Championship will now be played in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course.
Being from Pennsylvania, I hear a lot of my more privileged friends talk about their rare run-ins with Philly Cricket, as it is usually called. Those who have played it have said it is one of the nicest courses in Pennsylvania, and with Ardmore nearby, which is home of Merion Golf Club, that's a tall order:
NEW: The @PGATOUR has announced the Wells Fargo Championship will be renamed the Truist Championship and for 2025, while Quail hollow hosts the PGA Championship, it will be played at @pcc1854's Wissahickon Course.

The PGA TOUR has lost several sponsors this year as events have been impacted by fewer fans and a pullback in overall viewership. Wells Fargo obviously saw it fit to end its conglomeration with what has been one of the better regular season events during the FedEx Cup Season.
