WHAT THE FLING: Is Fling Golf the Future of the Fairway?

At the very beginning of Spring the guys over at Fling Golf sent over one of their Fling sticks for me to try out. I have seen these things out there, but I never gave it a go. Why? I play real golf.

But the more I started seeing them I kept coming back to saying “one day I’m going to try this out”. Well, now with the Fling Golf box staring me right in the face, I finally got my hands on it and immediately wanted to take it for spin.

After opening it up and trying it out at the park I was ready to go to my local track to play a round with it. I should have taken the advice of the club pro who said to play the forward tee’s but how could you?

I had overestimated how far I could throw this thing!  I quickly found out that it doesn’t go as far as I thought. I hooked up my Shot Scope V2 so I could get accurate data on my distances. I am so glad I did because it makes it easier for me to share with you what I found out. This thing is Fun!

Fling Golf Review

I have seen these things at my local track for a few years now. I love golf and all that comes with it but sometimes, you just want it to be easy. The Fling …

A few things to note when you fling it around the course. The distance is much shorter than what you would get when playing traditional golf. I would throw it between 130- 150 yards at best. There is no compression of the ball and there is no spin. This means that the ball doesn’t get the spring effect or cut through the air like a regular golf shot would do.

What it will do is go straight as an arrow. I brought one ball with me and one ball only. You can play any ball you want. It doesn’t matter because if you can find it, you can fling it. I also noticed that the ball does not stop on the green. No spin means that ball will roll out a bit so if you play it short, you will have closer putts.

Speaking of putting, it is hard. The trick is to treat the fling golf like one of those taller putters and kind of anchor it a bit. Think Adam Scott in the 2013 Masters. Not saying he was anchoring it, but you get what I’m saying. Once you get the hang of that, you can putt fairly well.

Lastly, I would say that because the distance is much shorter, playing stroke play is not the way to go. Go out with your kids or buddies and play Bingo, Bango, Bongo. Don’t worry about how many shots it takes to get up to the green, just try to get there first!

To put it simply, Fling Golf is a blast. It’s a change of pace from regular golf. You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy it. Hell, you could have never played golf a day in your life and you can still have fun. It can be done side by side with a traditional golfer with no impact to pace of play. Best of all, it’s pretty darn cheap. A fling golf stick is about $100 for a base model and because you can play any ball you want, a range ball could be used to play easily.

I can’t recommend trying this enough. If you have a local course like I do that offers the Fling Golf rental for FREE with a greens fee, you need to try it just once. I will be taking some non-golfers out with me soon so they can enjoy the course while I work on my game. Fling golf is a win in my book so if you are on the fence about trying it, you can trust me when I say it’s worth your time to give it a go just once. It’s like mini golf on steroids!

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
