WHOA: Former MLB Player Bobby Grich Chases Down Cart Thief

In the last year or so, there have been a ton of stories about professional golfers and celebrities having their clubs and personal items stolen. The most recent thief was incredibly bold in his theft…

It was reported earlier this week that a man at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club had jumped into another golfer’s cart while he was putting and took off with the man’s clubs, wallet, and phone. What the thief didn’t know is that he was stealing from Bobby Grich. For those who don’t immediately recognize that name, he’s a former all-star second baseman in the MLB, playing for the Baltimore Orioles and California Angels. Needless to say, Grich is not the man to steal from.

Typically, when something like this happens, the moment goes by so fast that you don’t have time to react. Not Grich, who immediately started chasing the culprit down the fairway on foot until he was able to jump into another player’s cart and continue the pursuit. After it was all said and done, Grich found his abandoned cart, wallet and clubs missing, but was able to find his phone and contact the authorities.

Grich also attempted to cancel his credit cards but the thief had already charged $1000 to Grich’s card. Here’s how Grich described the incident to local media: “I was just picking up my ball out of the hole and I hear kind of a clamor,” Grich told the Register. “Oh this guy is confused and he’s in the wrong cart. I yelled at him and he didn’t acknowledge me … he didn’t pay attention.” That’s when the pursuit started.

As of this moment, Grich nor the police have been able to locate the thief or any of Grich’s belongings. They are working hard to find out who took off in the cart. While Grich isn’t too upset about the loss of his wallet, it’s his clubs that he’s more worried about. He even stated after the incident that he was sad about losing his driver because he’s never had one that played that well.

While it’s nice to see Grich is able to move past the unfortunate incident, it’s a shame that this has become a more and more of a common occurrence in the world of golf. Hopefully, the authorities are able to bring the thief to justice and it will discourage others from trying to pull the same stunt in the future.
