Now Who’s the Best Golfer to Never Win a Major?

For years, the mantle of “best golfer to not win a major” was one carried by Sergio Garcia. Now that Garcia has finally gotten his first major, however, that title has to be placed upon someone else and there are many options.

Garcia had been without a major win after participating in 73 major tournaments, which was a big factor in giving him that title.  While number of majors played is not the only way to determine who is the new best golfer without a major championship, it is one statistic that can be used, along with others, such as World Golf Ranking and overall victories.  Using data like this, the PGA made a chart detailing who could be the best golfer not to win a major.

The first name that jumps off of the list as a strong contender is Lee Westwood.  Westwood has actually played in 76 major championships, more than Garcia did before winning this past week, and finished in the top ten of majors on 18 separate occasions.  To be fair to Westwood, he hasn’t captured many victories on the PGA TOUR in general, with just two victories under his belt, but his continued contention in majors makes him a strong candidate for this title.

Another name that is sure to garner consideration for the best golfer without a major is Steve Stricker.  While he is now up there in age, Stricker has had plenty of opportunities to capture a major.  He has played in fewer majors than Westwood, 68 to be precise, and has finished in the top ten only 13 times, but Striker has won 12 PGA TOUR events in his career.  He has shown that he can win but just not on a major championship stage.

Outside of these two candidates, there are many other names on the list that could become relevant as the years go on.  For example, there are young players like Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas that have not won a major yet and are high in the World Golf Rankings but they simply haven’t had enough exposure.  If years go by and they still haven’t won a major, however, these young stars could be candidates for the title.

With many options to choose from when it comes to deciding who the best player is to never win a major, it is hard to give the moniker to one player.  Perhaps, it is just better to hope that they can all one day find success and win their first major title as Sergio did at the Masters.
