WINNER: Michael Thompson Claims 2nd TOUR Victory at 3M Open
Michael Thompson plays gutsy golf down the stretch to win the 3M Open for his first victory on TOUR since the Honda Classic 7 years ago.
Thompson put on an absolute ball-striking clinic. He hit nearly 85% of greens in regulation on the week, putting almost no pressure on his short game. On the 16th hole, he was faced with what is widely considered the hardest shot in golf. 40 yard bunker shot. And what did he do? Oh just put it to 2 feet. The 218th ranked golfer in the world looked fantastic from Thursday-Sunday, and was unflappable.
Max Homa has said in recent weeks that his game was close, and he showed that this week. Aside from a mediocre round on Friday, Max played lights out. He was unable to convert late birdie bids, but finished at -16, T3. He will be in the field next week for the WGC, hoping to put it together again.
Adam Long made the cut on the number, seemingly with no shot to capture the title. Then the weekend happened. He went 63, 64 and was the clubhouse leader as Michael Thompson played his last hole. He was money on the greens, gaining 3 strokes putting on the week.
Tony Finau had a better Sunday compared to his last, but it still wasn’t enough to get it done. He was 2 back going into the round with another opportunity to capture his 2nd Tour win. His talent is limitless, which makes it even harder to believe that he only has 1 victory. It’s only a matter of time until he gets another one.
