FIRED: Tony Finau Drops Longtime Caddie Greg Bodine
Everything seems to have been going well for Tony Finau right now as he’s been finishing high on leaderboards in multiple tournaments this year. But that didn’t stop Finau from making a major change before the 3M Open this week.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that Finau would be moving on from his caddie, Greg Bodine. The news came as a bit of a shock as Bodine has been on Finau’s bag ever since he started on the PGA TOUR during the 2014-15 season. Together, the two won the 2016 Puerto Rico Open and made appearances in the Ryder Cup as well as the Presidents Cup the past two years.
After a 6 year run, Finau is sad to see his business relationship with Bodine come to an end but hopes to continue a personal friendship. “I think me and my caddie had a great run. We were together for six years and it’s a tough thing, you know,” Finau said. “On a personal level I love the guy and on a business level I felt it was time for a change in my situation and something just different. Unfortunately, our relationship business-wise has ended, but I look forward to getting somebody on the bag and making another great run.”
Many have been speculating on why Finau thought that now was the time to make a change and the general consensus seems to be that Finau can’t seem to get into the winner’s circle. Finau has only won one event, the beforementioned Puerto Rico Open, but has had several close calls since. He finished runner-up after losing a playoff at the Waste Management Open earlier this year after blowing a two-shot lead and struggled last week after leading at The Memorial at the end of two rounds.
With the 3M Open kicking off this week, Finau has swing coach Boyd Summerhays on his bag and it seems to be going well, as he has a share of the lead after his first round of play. Despite the good start, however, it doesn’t sound like Summerhays is a candidate to keep the role full-time, as Finau has stated that he is only filling in temporarily while he continues to search for a more permanent caddie.
Perhaps if Finau breaks through with a win at the 3M Open this week, he might reconsider if he wants Summerhays in the job full-time. Even if he doesn’t Finau’s search will be something to watch as we move closer to majors season in this unique PGA TOUR year.
