WLD: Is The World’s Longest Driver Cheating?
If you’re a casual fan of golf, it may be hard for you to get excited about some of the events that are on tap for the rest of the season. But one thing you may want to check out is the World Long Drive Championship and all the drama that’s coming with it.
For those unfamiliar with the event, it’s exactly how it sounds. It’s a competition where guys try to hit the longest drives they can within a field of play. It’s actually a huge event that starts off with a ton of participants that widdles down through group competition. And the one man that everyone is dying to see is Kyle Berkshire.
Berkshire is the #1 ranked driver in the world and hits absolute bombs off the tee. But in the round of 16 match that took place this week, Berkshire was struggling to remain in the competition. He had eight attempts to register his longest drive and his first seven went out of play. On his final drive, Berkshire punished the ball 424 yards down the playing surface. But there’s now a lot of controversy that is coming out of that drive.

The controversy started when a Twitter account with the name “Long Drive Sheriff” pointed out that Berkshire appeared to be moving a towel behind him to help align his shot. The account might seem like a random guy but he knows his stuff about the Long Drive Championship, as he cited multiple rules from the rulebook and how the rules were broken. But that issue might have been cleared up.
Upon hearing about the cheating accusations, Berkshire tweeted out that he uses his towel to keep his golf balls dry and he was instructed to move the towel back so it was unintentional. Long Drive Sheriff backed down after confirming that story with Berkshire and others. But, now he’s toting a new violation when Berkshire openly claimed that his coach was shouting instructions from the gallery, a blatant breach of the rules. No explanation has been given for that.

While these rules are actually listed for the competition, there’s no mention of penalties that are incurred from violating them so I don’t even know what action could have been taken. Regardless, Berkshire is still in the competition and you tune in the rest of the week to see him and others smash golf balls on the Golf Channel at 8:30 p.m. EST.
