Wyndham Clark Wins Weather-Shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Wyndham Clark becomes the winner of the 2024 AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, after just 54 holes.
Clark’s success was well deserved after a glittering round of 60 catapulted him to the lead, a leaderboard packed with Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Ludvig Aberg and Thomas Detry. Clark’s win will be full of footnotes and asterisks, as his course record of 60 was subject to the lift, clean and place rule, casting a shadow on whether it should stand as a course record.
Although I agree with the notion that he can only play against the people and the course set out in front of him, I do not find a logical argument that allows a course record to stand when the lie can be improved at every turn. The fact that the tournament has now been shortened to 54 holes isn’t a good result for the PGA Tour, as their signature event has modelled the LIV tournament set-up, 54 holes, a limited field, with no cut.

It was a safety issue at the end of the day – and it wasn’t safe for players to be teeing it up on Sunday. Reports of downed trees, collapsed tented structures and camera towers began circulating. With the Monday weather not looking much better, the PGA Tour confirmed the final round had been cancelled and also confirmed Wyndham Clark’s third PGA Tour victory, becoming the first reigning US Open Champion to win the AT&T since Johnny Miller in 1974 (via @JustinRayGolf).

The PGA Tour said:
“After consultation with Monterey County emergency authorities, who have implemented a shelter in place order until early tomorrow morning for the greater Pebble Beach community, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of all constituents, there will be no play on Monday. Therefore, in accordance with the PGA Tour regulations the tournament results will he final through the conclusion of 54 holes”
Another thorn in the side of the PGA Tour was that LIV had a Sunday all to themselves, as Joaquin Niemann closed out a playoff victory at Mayakoba. Niemann is still unable to play the majors as of right now, due to his decline in world ranking points after joining the LIV Tour.
The Tour will have to stomach the LIV comparisons for now, but can bounce back with the Waste Management this week, as Scottie Scheffler attempts the three-peat in Phoenix!
