20 Ways to Get Invited to the Masters Tournament

Did you know there are 20 different ways to get into The Masters?

There’s the obvious ones, for the past champions. They have lifetime exemptions for the annual event. That’s why we see the likes of two time winner Jose Maria Olazabal soaking it in while he can.

There’s always the amateur battle every year, we see the lucky winner in the Butler’s Cabin adjacent to the newly crowned green jacket recipient. This is decided by the U.S. Amateur title, and the runner up is also invited.

You can win any of the other majors, U.S. Open, Open Championship or the PGA. Winning the Players, or even Olympic Gold gets you into the field.

Winning the British Amateur secures you a place in the field, a spot which the gargantuan Christo Lamprecht fills this time around in 2024. The reason the amateur tournament is so competitive is the fact so many amateurs can get into the field. The Latin America amateur champion, Santiago de la Fuente got in when he won the championship in Panama in January.

Asia-Pacific Amateur, US. .Mid-Am champ and NCAA Division I title holder are all invited by Augusta National to compete each year. The Mid-Am spot is drawn to Hagestad like a magnet, making his third appearance at Augusta after a low amateur result at his debut in 2017. The other amateurs in the field are Neal Shipley and Jasper Stubbs.

Good performances in previous majors are a way in, the top 12 in the Masters from the previous year, the top 4 in the Open, US Open and PGA can all get in on merit. Winning a PGA Tour event gets you in, even though Nick Dunlap was already in due to his amateur prowess, his win at the AmEx made doubly sure.

Finally, the top 50 in the world on January 1st – and the week before the Masters begins – are all invited automatically if they’re not already in the field.
