REPORT: PGA Tour’s Plan for Big Money International Events May Not Happen

It’s been two months of big announcements and big money for PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in his response to LIV Golf swooping in and scooping up several of his big-name players.

But it appears as if one of those plans may not come to fruition.

ESPN is reporting that Monahan’s plan to create three international, no-cut events featuring the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings is being tabled for the time being. The original plan, announced in June, was to have these events, featuring $25 million purses, held in the fall of 2023—prior to the tour going back to a calendar-based schedule in 2024 (which is still happening).

The report goes on to say that the PGA Tour will instead focus on the 13 events that will be elevated in 2023, including purses of $20 million. It was originally announced that tournaments like the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Memorial, the Genesis Invitational, and others that haven’t been disclosed yet.

It wasn’t mentioned if the decision to pause the rollout of the international events is related to the money and opportunities that will be available from the made-for-prime-time golf series that will be a joint production of the PGA Tour and a company co-led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The TGL will feature six teams of three PGA Tour players and run on Monday nights from January-April starting in 2024.
