Changes Coming to LIV Golf May Signal John Rahm Getting His Wish

When reports began to surface that Jon Rahm was deep into negotiations to join LIV Golf late last year, one of the sticking points was the league making some changes to its format.

Since debuting in mid-2022, each LIV event has featured 48 players (12 teams of four) and three rounds.

Reports stated Rahm was looking for larger fields and a potential fourth round for each tournament

With the 2024 season a month away, it appears that one item on that wish list will be checked off.

The X (formerly Twitter) account Flushing It is reporting that not only will the field grow to accommodate Rahm’s new team (the 13th for the league), but two other players will join as well.

The 53rd and 54th golfer in the field each week will be filled by the traveling reserve players. They will only accumulate individual points and money.

A potential reason to add six to LIV’s fields instead of four is that it now would be able to have three players begin each hole for the shotgun starts. It also makes another nod to the circuit’s name – CEO Greg Norman said the LIV monicker came from the Roman numeral for 54, which would be a golfer’s score if they birdied every hole.

Rahm, speaking on The Jim Rome Show recently, said that he still would like to see a fourth day added to each tournament to help with the league’s quest for Official World Golf Ranking points.

“I still maintain my stance that I would like to see four days,” Rahm said. “I do think it will make the discussion for LIV to have world ranking points a little bit easier.”

LIV’s 2024 schedule tees off in Mayakoba, Mexico, Feb 2-4.
